LI Junior Rules Changes for Travel Soccer in the Fall 2008
Long Island Junior Soccer League has instituted the following rules changes that will impact soccer this coming fall.
First: As a "pilot program," Long Island Junior has decided to allow for parents and coaches to be on the same side of the field for the U10 and U11 age groups only. This is in response to the growing problem of poor parental behavior on the sidelines and is at the request of many coaches who asserted that it is impossible to control their players’ parents if they are on the opposite side of the field. This system is not without its own challenges, but the LIJ Board figured they would give it a try.
Players and coaches from Team A, along with their parents, will be on one side of the field, but on opposite sides of the midfield line...parents on one side; coaches and players on the other. this will allow the coach to more easily "control" his or her players’ parents, need be, but it will also allow some separation between the team and the parents so that the players and coaches don’t have to deal with discussion during the game. Parents will not be permitted, unless of course in an emergency, to cross into the side of the midfield line that is occupied by the coaches and players.
Second: Long Island Junior has expanded the maximum roster size for U16 teams to 22 players, as it has been for U17 and above. Although teams U16 and older will now be permitted to hold rosters of up to 22 players, only 18 players may be dressed and officially rostered for each game. This allows coaches to reinforce their rosters in order to maximize game-day rosters and minimize the effects of players having other commitments on game days.
